Forest Hill Elementary School

School News

Dear Forest Hill Parents,

Would you be interested in serving on the Forest Hill Elementary School Site Council as a parent representative? To nominate yourself or a fellow parent, you may submit your/his/her name in writing to the school office by Friday, September 23, 2022.

School Site Council (SSC) is composed of equal numbers of staff and parent representatives who serve a two-year term. They meet between six to seven times a year to oversee the implementation of various programs in the school, including state and federally-funded programs. The primary responsibility of the SSC is to participate in the development and monitoring of the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), evaluate the effectiveness of programs, monitor the use of funds available to the school site, seek input from school advisory committees, and reaffirm or revise the school goals.

Members have an obligation to make decisions that will best serve ALL children within the whole school community. The SSC constantly is reviewing the content of the plan in relation to the school goals to foster student development. The cycle requires continuous reflection of the goals and programs operated at the school based on verifiable data. Funding from the state is budgeted through SSC so it aligns with the school plan.

For the coming year, we have 2 parent openings, with one opening being for a parent of an English Language Learner.

Our first meeting for SSC will be Wednesday, September 22, 2022 from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM in the school library. The council will determine future meeting times and dates at our first meeting. This is a two-year position. The membership term is September 2022 through August 2024.

If you would like to self nominate or nomiate another parent, please click on the following link, complete the form, and submit to the front office.

Dear Forest Hill Parents,

It was wonderful to connect with so many of you last Thursday for Back to School Night. Our teachers put a lot of time and effort into their professional presentations so you know what to expect for the year. Your children appreciate the time you put into attending school events, and the support they feel. I look forward to more events that connect us this year, and welcome you to attend! I hope you have reserved your tickets to the SJSU x Campbell Union football game night, on October 7th. I hope to see you there!

As we have settled into the year, we are setting behavior expectations, classroom and intervention teachers are beginning their assessments, and we are working with PTA to schedule some assemblies, field trips, and parent workshops for the year. Construction continues to unfold. Even in the heatwave, construction and landscaping crews have installed our new gate by the administration building, began to plant some trees and bushes as well as installed the turf for our mini pavilion. The new striping on our playground will occur over the next couple of months as well. Things are coming along beautifully!

Students and staff have been flexible and accommodating during the heatwave we have had this week. Thank you to our parent volunteers and current noon duty who stepped up to offer extra help/hours during this week to ensure we have proper coverage. These heat waves do not happen often, but when they do we definitely do all we can to ensure everyone is safe, comfortable, and healthy.

Lastly, if you did not get a chance to read last week’s newsletter regarding drop-off and pick-up, please do. We are still experiencing some challenges with parents leaving cars unattended and clogging up traffic along McCoy Ave. when the drive through circle is full.

 We appreciate your support!

Warmly,

Christy Chalfant, Principal

Dear Forest Hill Parents,

As we move into our second full week of school and will soon move into the new month of September, we have some friendly reminders about pickup/drop-off and parking that will increase the safety of our campus and support our community members. A concern that all schools have is how to contend with the busy 15 minute period each morning and afternoon during drop off and pick up. At Forest Hill, we have the added challenge of current construction. Luckily, we also have an amazing tool in this guide to making drop off and pick up as smooth as possible! If you haven't looked it over before, please take a minute to do so. Thank you to parent Rich Wong for putting the guide together for us.

  • When you enter the drop off circle, pull all the way up as far as you can - don't leave any open parking spots.

  • Drivers MUST remain in the vehicle at all times. Students need to unbuckle themselves and open and close the car door themselves.

  • Staff members helping in the drop off circle are there for our children's safety. Please be respectful and follow their directions.

  • If you have both primary and upper grade students, you may be asked to circle around after picking up your younger child to allow other parents to enter the drop off circle. If you would rather not do this, you can always park in the neighborhood and walk over to school to pick up both children.

Please see the general following friendly reminders:

  • Parking is allowed on side streets only

  • All of our parking lots are for staff parking only

  • Parking or lining up in the bus loading/unloading area is not allowed

  • Parking in red zones is not allowed

If you have a child that needs assistance in getting to the classroom, please arrange for an alternative plan. This may include contacting your child’s teacher or arriving to school early to allow for parking and walking. Getting out of your car holds up the loop and causes a traffic back-up on McCoy Ave., which impacts our community.

Additionally, at dismissal, particularly on Wednesdays, we cannot hold up traffic while waiting to get in the loop. We must circle the neighborhood until the loop opens up. Again, this impacts the traffic flow in our neighborhood.

When we all follow the guidelines, drop off and pick up go quickly, smoothly, and ensures all are safe.

We look forward to seeing you September 1st at Back to School Night. Please remember this is an adult only event.

  • 6:00-6:30   TK-2nd Grade

  • 6:30-7:00   General Meeting w/ Administration and PTA (meet at lunch tables)

  • 7:00-7:30   Grades 3-5

Warmly,

Dear Forest Hill Families,

Welcome to the first full week of school for the 2022-23 school year. We had a successful start to the year, and this was due to all of the hard work of the staff who worked tirelessly to plan, make sure that I was kept up to date, and helped set up procedures to ensure the day was smooth. Many parents in the community have expressed how calm, positive and welcoming the start was, and this was such a pleasure to hear.

As you may have heard, we have some important dates coming up. This Friday, we have our first Coffee with the Principal. This will be an in person event, in our cafeteria and will be from 8:15-9:15am. For this first coffee, Mrs. Armann and I will introduce ourselves, discuss construction updates, invite you to give feedback on future topics and will also discuss how to read and understand the CAASPP test results our 4th and 5th graders received, which will be available via Powerschool on Thursday, August 25th.

Additionally, we are holding our in person Back to School Night on Thursday, September 1st. The schedule will be as follows:

  • 6:00-6:30pm Grades TK-2nd (parents will go directly to their child’s classroom)

  • 6:30-7:00pm All Parents in the new courtyard (we will gather at the lunch tables)

  • 7:00-7:30pm Grades 3rd-5th (parents will go directly to their child's classroom)

As a friendly reminder, this is an adult only event. This is a great time to come on campus, meet your child’s teacher if you have not yet had the chance to do so, meet other parents, and learn about the classroom specific items for your child this year. We will also have some guests on site to learn more about their programs and will hear from our wonderful PTA.

We look forward to seeing you on campus soon!

Warmly,

Ms. Chalfant

Principal

Dear Forest Hill Families,

Tomorrow marks our first day of school for the 2022-2023 school year. We are SO excited to welcome your children back to school. Our staff have been working tirelessly to prepare for the first day of school. Our office staff continue to place new students in classrooms while helping all parents and staff who come in for assistance. Our teachers & staff have been doing pre-assessments, prepping their classrooms and materials, and doing professional learning in anticipation of the first day. Our district staff have been working hard to oversee the on-going construction to ensure play structures, our school grounds and parking lots are clean and safe for children to return. Our custodial staff have been working hard to clean, set up for events, and help teachers with any needs they have. Our PTA has been supporting the beginning of the school year needs and will hold our Coffee and Kleenex event, which we have not had since pre-COVID. We invite you to join us for coffee in the cafeteria tomorrow after drop off. TK and Kindergarten parents will be invited to join at 8:40am, after a first day activity in their child’s classroom. Please be sure to thank someone from our community when you see them for all they have done!

Friendly reminder that we have limited parking on our campus. We highly encourage you to walk if possible, and if you drive, to please find parking on the street and walk your child to campus. You also have the option to drive through our circle and drop-off your child.

As a reminder, class lists will be sent via Parent Square at 5pm tonight, August 17th. Due to construction and safety reasons, we do ask you to refrain if possible from coming on campus tonight.

For parents who were unable to attend our Welcome Back Orientation, we promised the link to our slides. You can find them here: TK/Kinder/New Parent Orientation Slides. If you have any questions related to COVID be sure to visit our district COVID-10 2022-23 website.

We are allowing parent volunteers on campus this year. If you are interested, please let your child’s teacher know, and they will take the next steps to get you approved as a volunteer.

Lastly, we hope you save the date for two upcoming events. We will have our first Coffee with the Principal on Friday, August 26th from 8:15-9:15am in the cafeteria and our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 1st from 6:00-7:30pm.

We look forward to seeing you around and meeting your children tomorrow.

Warmly,

Ms. Chalfant & Mrs. Armann

Dear Forest Hill Community,

We are excited about the modernization happening at Forest Hill and look forward to welcoming families back to school. The site will be fully functional with access to all doors of all rooms and the new lunch shelter ready to use. All completed areas will be clean and ready to use, and the entire site will be safe for students and staff.

The summer construction projects were ambitious, with much of it happening underground.

  • New phone lines, fiber optic cable, and clock/bell/paging system throughout site

  • Switchgear and wiring for new main electrical service

  • New storm drains and sanitary sewer

  • New lunch shelter, built-in lunch tables, and concrete paving and planters

Continued Construction

Our school is getting a major facelift that takes time. Work will continue while the school year is underway:

  • The area around the library will be fenced off so new decorative concrete and paving can be completed in the weeks after school opens. The library will still be able to be used.

  • Planting of trees and bushes will happen by early fall.

  • Striping on the playground will happen a couple of weeks after school starts.

  • Construction of the new Administration Wing and the parking lot next to it. (Scheduled completion is early next year. The office staff is staying in the existing office until we can move in.)

Parking and Access

The pick-up and drop-off will be the same as last school year, which is at the curb of McCoy Ave. Parking remains the same: in front of the cafeteria and in the back lot by the softball field. (See our youtube video: Forest Hill - How to Use Drop Off Circle)

Warmly,

Ms. Chalfant & Mrs. Armann

This schedule will help with drop off/pick-up times, less waiting around for families who have students who get out earlier, but need to wait for the older siblings, better prep-blocks of time for teachers, and a more manageable lunch schedule for yard duty.

Please review for your information.

The first day of school will be August 18th.
