Officials from the State of California will be releasing scores from the State’s new testing system in September, not August, as originally planned.

“We are taking an abundance of caution to ensure that the substantial amount of data we are receiving is properly collected and placed in new files on a new site,” said Department of Education spokeswoman Pam Slater. “Additionally, the department will be launching a new website to display the results and needs sufficient time to test the new site.”

Campbell Union School District (CUSD) students participated in the new testing system, known as Smarter Balanced, last spring. The assessments are computer-based tests that measure student knowledge of California’s English Language Arts and Mathematics standards for grades 3-8.

“We’re glad they want everything to be accurate and complete before sending out the official reports,” said CUSD Superintendent Eric Andrew. “This year’s scores are a new baseline for measuring student progress, and we all want them to be reliable.”

Andrew said teachers have multiple ways to measure student achievement, so they can still tailor instruction to the student’s needs and talk to parents about how to continue progress on meeting standards.  When the assessment data comes in, it will be added to the mix, he said.

State officials plan to release scores to schools in early September, and if all goes according to plan, parents would see official student score reports in the fall. They also caution against comparing scores from the new tests with those from old tests. The new tests are too fundamentally different from the old ones to make any reliable comparisons between the two, they said.

Dear Forest Hill Families,

One of the things that make Forest Hill such a wonderful school is the supportive family community present here. Unfortunately as a family, while we are able to celebrate with one another, there are also times when we need to grieve together. It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I share the passing of our second grade student, Logan Walter Martinez. Logan was swimming at his grandparents’ home in Alabama and had a terrible and tragic accident this past Sunday.

Logan was in Ms. Lee’s kindergarten class and Mrs. Schubert’s first grade class. Logan’s parents have both been a vital and important part of the FH community. Logan’s father, Walter Martinez was our Project Cornerstone lead parent and yard duty support person.

We have provided district counseling support to our staff as well as a partnership with the Center for Living and Dying. If you or your child would like to speak with someone, we are working to have staff from the Center for Living with Dying at our site on Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 in the library.

If you would like to make a donation, Logan’s family has set up a Go Fund Account: http://www.gofundme.com/logansusanaaron

There is an additional fund set up too: https://www.firefamilyfoundation.org/tributes/detail/articletype/articleview/articleid/357/walter-martinez-jr-angel-fund

Forest Hill School’s new website is more attractive, easier to see on mobile devices (e.g. tablets and smartphones), and more user friendly than our old site. Now you can easily check the events calendar, find school news, contact our staff, see what’s for lunch, and much more. You can even change the language.

We’ll be refining it and adding new features as time goes one. For now, we invite you to take a look around, try it out, and let us know what you think.

Our school motto is part of our Positive Behavior Support and Interventions (PBIS) structure. The goal is to work together to create and maintain a school environment that is Predictable, Positive, Safe, and Consistent. Our three primary school rules are Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. This first week we are defining, teaching, reviewing and modeling positive social and behavioral expectations in all areas of the school based on what these three rules look like and sound like in each location. The expectations, language, and follow through are the same for everyone. Stay tuned for more information and ways that you can help at home.

  • We encourage everyone to walk to school. If you need to drive your child, students are to be dropped off and picked up in the large driveway loop in front of the kindergarten playground. The small driveway in front of the office is for buses only.
  • The driveway loop is for students use. Cars can’t be left unattended in the loop.
  • At the end of the school day, all parents and family members need to wait in the picnic grove for the bell to ring.
