"The recent California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores reflect a ‘snapshot' in time of our progress towards mastering the Common Core State Standards, but they don’t tell the whole story,” said CUSD Superintendent Eric Andrew.  “We are disaggregating these results and reviewing our other assessment data to pinpoint where we need to bolster our instructional practice and ensure that all of our students succeed.”

He added that schools start this year with the newly adopted curriculum in our classrooms, 1-to-1 technology in nearly all grades, and students who are energized by the project-based learning we are able to provide through community partnerships. "We are going to leap ahead this year,” he said.

As of September 14th, the testing company is shipping the individual student reports to the district office. As soon as we receive them we will mail them to parents. More information about the State assessments and a link to the data is available on our assessment web page.

On September 8, the State Board of Education approved key elements of a new accountability system that evaluates schools and districts in 10 areas critical to student performance. Read the news release.

Saturday, September 17 was Coastal Clean Up Day.  A number of Forest Hill students and their families helped to clean up about a half mile of the creek behind our school. Many hands made light work.  The volunteers removed approximately 55 pounds of trash and 15 pounds of recyclables out of the creek. The creek was clean in a little more than an hour. A few of the volunteers were disappointed that there was so little trash to pick up!  The eager Forest Hill volunteers include brothers Andrew and Kevin Chen, Christopher Henry, Celena Pirkl, Kalie Hand, David and Ellie Foulkes, Emily Crecelius, Amelia Ocher, and Will Louderback. Former Forest Hill students lending their hands to the task include Natalie Hand, Joseph Crecelius, Tadayoshi Pirkl, and Julia and Olivia Ocher. There will be another creek clean up in late May.

We surveyed our students last week on how they travel to Forest Hill. 62% of our students are coming by car. We need your help! Please consider having your child walk or roll to Forest Hill. You may want to talk with your neighbors to start a walking school bus. Parents can walk a group of children to a meeting location then another parent can take them the remaining distance. We will take another survey in October. Let's see if we can increase our walking and rolling to school percentage!

Forest Hill is very proud of our new STEM program for grades 4th and 5th. Each week, students receive an hour of STEM curriculum. Currently, students are learning about engineering. In October, they will be learning about levees. In November, they will study earthquakes. In December, students will hone their coding skills. Mrs. Stephan is working hard to create an environment that promotes the 4 C’s (Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking and Collaboration). Please share with us your student’s feedback on this new course.
