Extraordinary learning with ordinary boxes

Fifth graders in Mrs. Yang’s class took on the Cardboard Challenge and gained skills in math, design, engineering and more.
They were inspired by the movie “Caine’s Arcade” to create games from cartons, egg crates, and other ordinary materials. A project of the Imagination Foundation, the Global Cardboard Challenge lets children explore their interests and passions while teaching valuable "21st century" skills like critical thinking, resourcefulness, perseverance and teamwork. The students made prototypes, tested, and modified their designs to prepare for a school event featuring their hand-made games of skill.
They also learned some business basics, such as marketing, pricing, and the importance of considering feedback from “customers." Their event raised over $200 in donations to the Second Harvest food bank.
