Campbell Union School District’s children need not go hungry when school is out this summer, thanks to the Seamless Summer food program. From June 19th to August 14th, lunch will be served at the following times and locations to children aged 2–18 years:

11-11:30 a.m. -- Rosemary Elementary, 401 W Hamilton Ave. (near Winchester Blvd.), in Campbell

12:30-1 p.m.  -- Castlemont Elementary, 3040 E. Payne Ave (near Winchester Blvd.), in Campbell

The Seamless Summer food program combines features of the National School Lunch Program and the Summer Food Service Program to provide meals to children when school is not in session for extended periods of time. The U.S. Food and Nutrition Services Department also offers an online map to help families locate summer meal programs near their homes.

We want students to begin to own their own learning, be empowered, and actively engage in their education. For that reason, we must give students a voice and hear directly from them about what they like, want and feel they need in their school experience.

chart of participation data

To gather that input, we chose a Student Voice ThoughtExchange, an easy-to-use and interpret method with questions for our students in grades 3-8.Nearly all of them participated in the April 2018 online forum, sharing their thoughts and ideas with us and each other. The district- and school-level results are available online and from your child's school. They offer valuable information for school and district plans aimed at providing students with an education beyond the expected.

Three Campbell Union School District students won the honor of having their work inducted to the Young Artists Showcase, the largest collection of adjudicated student artwork in California. These Forest Hill Elementary School artists are among 28 county-wide inductees being celebrated this year:

  • Jaron Li - The Doctor Seuss Gunky Monster (Kindergarten)
  • Soyoung Jee - Trees at Sunset (3rd Grade)
  • Eva Hernandez - The Streets of a City (4th Grade)

Their work was unveiled at a gala event on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.

The Young Artists Showcase is an annual competition that invites teachers to submit 2D, 3D or 4D student artwork to become part of the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s 900-pieces-and-growing collection. The student artists may choose to have their original work or a facsimile added to the permanent collection, which includes paintings, drawings, watercolors, photographs, sculptures and multi-media works.

Forest Hill Elementary School, located at 4450 McCoy Ave., in San Jose, is one of 12 schools operated by the Campbell Union School District. The District values art in education and has partnered with Villa Montalvo and others to provide art instruction at its schools. The District also exhibits student artwork at its central office, located at 155 N. Third St., in Campbell, during regular hours.

Campbell Union School District’s Forest Hill and Marshall Lane elementary schools are recipients of the 2018 California Distinguished School award. Pictured, left to right, are District Superintendent Shelly Viramontez, Forest Hill Principal Denise Khalid, Marshall Lane Principal Priscilla Spencer, and Board President Tom Gemetti at the school district’s annual recognition event.

“The teams from these two schools—which includes staff, students and parents—have demonstrated their commitment to academic achievement,” said Governing Board President Tom Gemetti. “They apply their creativity, resources and talents toward providing students with a great school experience.”

The California Distinguished School Program recognizes elementary and middle and high schools in alternate years, which means awardees hold the title for two years. Schools that applied were eligible based on their performance and progress on the state indicators as described on the California School Dashboard. Indicators include test scores, suspension rates, and English learner progress.

The Campbell Library was a-buzz as 300 people—students, families, teachers and principals—came out for Campbell Union School District’s 40th annual Writing Faire. The event features displays of student writing and celebrates literacy expression in its many forms.

Families clustered around the library stacks to read the stories, poems and reports as their students excitedly explained their work to them.

Adding to the excitement was a drawing for prizes donated by Assistance League Los Gatos-Saratoga, Office Depot, and others, cookies from the Friends of the Campbell Library, and a green-screen photo booth to commemorate the anniversary.
