Campbell Union School District will hold a virtual community presentation about bringing students to campus under Phase 2 of its School Reopening Plan.

“As local COVID-19 conditions continue to improve, the county may reach the Red Tier soon and our phased-in return to campus will begin soon after that,” says District Superintendent Shelly Viramontez. “We want to inform our community about what to expect and give them time to prepare for the transition.”

Updated Fri, Apr 8th

Last night, I provided an update to the Governing Board on the status of our Reopening Plans in light of new developments related to the pandemic.

I shared that, just yesterday afternoon, the California Public Health Department released new guidelines. We will be reviewing the new guidelines to ensure we have addressed all necessary elements. These amended guidelines are required for all schools in the state.

I reiterated our  plan to not move to Phase 2 of reopening until we are in the Red (Substantial) Tier. We are monitoring developments related to the pandemic, supporting students and staff with remote learning, and readying for when we are able to begin our phased-in approach. We have started our employee COVID-19 testing. Our CampbellCare, preschools, and infant/toddler programs remain open, and we continue to advocate for our district’s needs to support students and staff.

On Dec. 30, the Governor announced a proposal for grant funds to support a phased-in reopening of schools for in-person instruction. He proposes $2 billion for a return to in-person instruction, funded through Prop 98 funds. His plan would provide about $450 per student as an incentive grant to fund the added costs of reopening. It must be approved by legislation, which means we anticipate adjustments to the proposal over the coming weeks, even as we work  to submit our  plan by the Feb. 1 deadline.

Throughout the months of this pandemic, we have had to be adaptable as we support our students and remain focused on their education and safety. We are remaining vigilant and preparing to act on the next phase of our plan when conditions allow.

Parents of young children may be looking ahead to August and the day their child starts kindergarten. There is much to be hopeful about this new stage in your child’s lifetime of learning. And as the pandemic subsides, we eagerly anticipate welcoming students back to our classrooms and a more familiar school experience than has been the case this year.

Whether you are new to the enrollment process or revisiting it, we offer this overview to get you started.

How do I register my child for school?

Starting January 19th, parents may use a computer or smartphone to register their child online for the 2021-22 school year. Our Enrollment staff is happy to help and are available by phone and email.

  • Email: sflores [at] campbellusd.org () or kphillips [at] campbellusd.org ()
  • Phone: 408-364-4200

(Note: In-person assistance is available by appointment only, and all COVID-19 safety precautions must be observed.)

At what age may my child attend Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?

Kindergarten is for children who will be five years old on or before September 1.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is for children who will be five years old between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2. TK is the first year of a two-year Kindergarten program that uses a modified Kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.

Which is my school?

Your elementary or middle school is determined by your child’s home address. To confirm which is your attendance-area school, visit our  Online School Locator or phone: (408) 364-4200. More information about school placement is available on our Enrollment FAQ page.

To learn more about the school we suggest you attend a virtual visit.

Students are assigned to their attendance-area school, except in cases of school transfer through Open Enrollment or other special circumstance. (Requesting a different in-district school requires an extra step during our Open Enrollment period, which ends Fri., Feb. 12 at 4pm.)

What documents are needed?

Proof of residence, immunizations, and certain other documents are required for school.

Is there childcare?

Yes, onsite childcare—called CampbellCare—is available before and after school. Learn more.

What about COVID-19?

We are committed to providing safe learning environments and quality education, so that all of our students may reach their highest potential. We are continuing to monitor the pandemic circumstances, and we are being told that while we may still need to offer additional safety protocols, when the new school year begins in August 2021, it will be more like we are used to. Should conditions require us to continue to be more cautious, we have the assurance that our School Reopening Plan was reviewed and approved by State and County public health officials and meets all requirements and recommendations from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.

Our high-quality infant, toddler, and preschool programs are open to all children, from infants to 5 years old, whether or not you live in our district! Both fee-based and subsidized programs are available, year round, with part-time or full-time options.

This new year brings reasons for hope in the fight against the pandemic. Unfortunately, some old challenges remain.

With the county’s COVID-19 status still in the Widespread (Purple) Tier, we cannot proceed with our January 19 reopening plans. We will need to remain in our Phase One distance learning probably for several more weeks.

You may have heard about Governor Newsom’s announced a $2 billion “Safe Schools for All” plan to encourage more schools to reopen for in-person instruction in 2021. While it’s a welcome idea, we know from experience that the devil is often in the details. The legislators must sign off on the proposed plan, and they do not return to session until January 9th. As we have previously experienced, the proposed plan will likely have adjustments before it is solidified.

One of the plan’s metrics is the county’s case counts must be below 28 per 100,000 to be eligible.  As of January 5th, Santa Clara County was at 61 per 100,000, according to CovidActNow.

Through our weekly meetings with legislative analysts, public health officials and other decision-makers, we will continue to advocate for the needs of our district, synthesize the information, and adapt to this proposal’s developments to our local situations and resources.

We will update our community—families and staff—as more information becomes known.

Meanwhile, our district and community partners have arranged various supports for students and families. We are continuing to provide up to five days worth of free breakfast, lunch, and after school meals, five days a week, at seven of our schools. Our CampbellCare program has opened and has space at several school sites. (Cusdexpandedlearning [at] campbellusd.org (Email them for details).) Community Liaisons, school counselors and other specialists are available to connect students and families to community based resources for social, emotional and physical health needs.

We will continue to prepare for when we can safely welcome teachers and students back to the classroom for in-person instruction.

Updated Tue, Oct 10th

Schools in our district have been planning to begin the gradual return to in-person instruction once our Winter Break ends. However, Santa Clara County's recent stay-at-home orders are in effect until January 4th, meaning there likely will be a change in our start date.

The superintendent will provide an update to the Governing Board at its December 10 meeting. School principals will send information to parents on Friday, Dec. 11th that includes our COVID-19 Parent Handbook. The handbook is intended to help families have a better idea about what to expect when students start returning to the classroom in the new year.

Please check your email and our websites frequently for updates.
