“Social-emotional development is as important as their academic development,” said Superintendent Shelly Viramontez. “Our kindergarten teachers blend both into their lessons and start our students on the path of becoming collaborative, self-directed, innovative, empathetic  critical thinkers.”

Campbell Union School District’s Kindergarten Curriculum Guide shows the step-by-step skills that these youngest students will come to master over the course of the 2021-22 school year.

This week, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued guidance that applies CDC’s updated recommendations to the California context. The foundational principle of this guidance is that all students must have access to safe, full in-person instruction for as much instructional time as possible  in the 2021-22 school year.

The guidance places a strong emphasis on virus-mitigating measures, such as vaccinations, masking, and testing.

“We are so pleased that we will be able to bring back all students, TK-8, for full time instruction,” said Campbell Union School District Superintendent Shelly Viramontez. “We are looking closely at the requirements in the CDPH guidance and pending legislation to see what revisions are needed in our School Reopening Plan.

“Because our community has low community spread and high vaccination rates, we anticipate that our students and adults will be wearing face covering indoors, and that face coverings will be optional outdoors,” she said. “Of course, if conditions change, we will adjust the restrictions accordingly.”

Both the CDPH and the CDC K-12 School Guidance cite recent evidence that indicates that in-person instruction can occur safely without minimum physical distancing requirements when other mitigation strategies, primarily masking, are fully implemented, according to the CDPH.

“Masks are one of the most effective and simplest safety mitigation layers to prevent in-school transmission of COVID-19 infections and to support full time in-person instruction in K-12 schools,” the guidance states.

There is also pending legislation (AB 130) that discusses providing independent study for those students whose health would be at risk by participating in in-person instruction. District staff is monitoring this evolving legislation closely to incorporate any new requirements into its Reopening Plan. District families will receive more information about the plan by the end of July, and the Governing Board will receive an update at its August 5th meeting.

Schools and the District will post details—such as arrival and dismissal times—on their websites over the coming weeks and will email other specifics to families in early August.

The excitement that often comes with the summer break from school tends to wear off after a few weeks, and children begin to complain that “there’s nothing to do.” We’ve collected ideas that you might find helpful as you keep your child active and interested in the weeks before school resumes.

READ FOR 20 MINUTES A DAY. Reading every day is a great habit to reinforce. Magazines, books, newspapers—reading keeps their imagination engaged and helps prevent learning loss. It is also a great quiet-time activity. Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months.  It doesn’t matter when they read, just that they do it every day.

BE CREATIVE EVERY DAY. Whether it is arts and crafts, dancing, music, or a play, creating something can build confidence and resourcefulness. There are many craft kits and inexpensive supplies everywhere. Learn a new dance step, draw or perform scenes from a favorite movie, decorate a room, or write a new ending to a well-known story.  Just do something creative every day.

GET OUTSIDE AND BE ACTIVE EVERY DAY. Being active for at least 20 minutes a day is not only good for the body; it’s good for the mind. There are so many options: take a walk in the neighborhood, visit a park or playground, jump rope, dance, play tag or catch or other neighborhood games.

Thirty-nine Campbell Union School District (CUSD) students are earning the Middle School Pathway Award Towards the Seal of Biliteracy Award this year from the Santa Clara County Office of Education, marking a milestone toward earning the State Seal of Biliteracy at the end of high school.

The Pathway award recognizes students who, by the end of 5th and/or 8th grade, have demonstrated a commitment to becoming biliterate and who have reached a degree of proficiency in both English and at least one another language. Some of the 39 students earned the award for proficiency in multiple languages, including: Farsi, French, Greek, Hindi, Japanese, Kannada, Mandarin, Marathi, Russian, Sanskrit, Serbo-Croation, Spanish and Tamil.

“We’re proud of these students’ achievements. The process is rigorous and they persevered through challenging tasks during a pandemic and remote learning,” said Superintendent Shelly Viramontez. “Research indicates that being bilingual and biliterate fosters mental dexterity, builds cultural appreciation, and validates the rich cultural backgrounds of our students.”

To earn the award, the CUSD students had to complete an oral presentation in their target language, reach an identified proficiency level in English-Language Arts, and be students in good standing who are classified as either English Only (EO), Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP), or English Learner (EL), and take at least one year in a World Language.

“We offer students opportunities to learn languages and build cultural competency so they can have success in our schools and beyond. If they go on to earn the Seal of Biliteracy in high school, their efforts can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices,” said Denise Kilpatrick, Coordinator of English Language Development Programs.
