Classrooms have been busy with get-to-know-you activities, including this STEM challenge in Ms. Lee's fourth grade class. In small groups, students had to cooperatively build a cup tower without using thier hands! They had a string tool that they had to operate together. This helped build communication and cooperation skills. What a fun way to get to know each other! Thank you, Ms. Lee!

Good Afternoon Forest Hill Families,

Hope you are all enjoying the last few weeks of summer break.

We wanted to inform you that classroom and teacher assignments for Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade will be going out on August 15th at 4pm via ParentSquare.

While you may be able to get into PowerSchool before these dates, keep in mind we are still scheduling and balancing class numbers and all class assignments are tentative for the first two weeks of school.

We have also attached our 2023-2024 Forest Hill Handbook. Please be sure to read and review with your child prior to the start of school.

5th grade students in Mrs. Hart's and Ms. Ensor's classes completed a huge milestone this year - finishing their first podcasts!

This was a student directed inquiry task with a focus on writing, research, listening and speaking standards as well as an emphasis the POGs such as self direction, collaboration, communication, and empathy. Teachers gave the students the guidelines and constraints as presented by NPR, taught them how to use SoundTrap to create original music and pristine audio recordings, and provided them with an outline to help organize their podcast. Classes also listened to a variety of podcasts and analyzed their format.
Mrs. Hart says, "As educators, understand that we need to provide students with the skills needed to communicate effectively with a broader audience. This was an excellent opportunity for our 5th graders and allowed them exposure to an authentic listening audience."
Here are a sampling of podcasts that were submitted to NPR:

The History of the NFL (Enzo, Dylan N., Dylan C.)

What’s the Buzz? (Mohisha, Audrey A. & Anna)

Positive Health (Audrey Y. & Malia)

Depression in Minors (Clementine & Audrey C.)

Environmental Stress (Elsa, Arya & Kayla)

Technoblade (Kallahan, Luke & Soham)

A Healthier Choice (Jace & Tashi)

Soccer History (Keshav, Landon, Yonghun)

Save Our Schools (Kyra, Violet, Chloe)

Dogs and Cats with Bad Reputations (Devyn & Kieran)

Which is Better, Cats or Dogs? (Colin & Donovan)

We had the privilege of celebrating Forest Hill's people of the year last week during a recognition ceremony at Sherman Oaks school. Congratulations to:

  • Patrice McNeal, our Teacher of the Year. Ms. Patrice's classroom is one of those special places where as soon as you walk in, you can just feel the warmth and happiness that she creates. Anyone who visits her classroom mentions this, as well as the fact that she has very high expectations for her students. She never says her students can’t do something or won’t be able to do it. Ms. Patrice is an amazing example of a student-focused, growth mindset teacher who proves her kids can do their best and beyond.

  • Maryam Nemazie, our Volunteer of the Year. This is Maryam’s second year as a parent and volunteer at Forest Hill. In that short amount of time, she has jumped in and made herself a vital part of our parent community. She helps organize and takes part in so many activities, it’s incredible, and she does it all with a genuine smile.

  • Jackie Morris, our Classified Employee of the Year, and also CUSD's District Classified Employee of the Year! Jackie couldn't make it to the ceremony, but we took the opportunity to celebrate her regardless. As admin assistant, Jackie is in charge of such things as keeping track of the budget, answering phone calls, keeping the calendar up to date, and much more. And while Jackie is an expert at all of those parts of her job, that’s not the reason she is so special.  It’s the way she treats everyone as family and gives her heart to our community that we will miss the most when she retires. It’s the way she greets children with warm hugs, it’s the way she remembers what’s going on with you and asks how things are going, and it’s the way she makes you feel like you matter that makes her special.

Congratulations to all three of these special people! We are so grateful for all you do and for how you make Forest Hill an even better place to be.

Fourth grade's annual Gold Rush Day was a hit! Students got to experience panning for gold (including the long and difficult process to get the materials ready) as well as some of the more fun aspects of this time in California's history! Students even got to practice their math facts while playing card games. Thank you to Ms. Lee, Mrs. Durham, and Mrs. Layton for organinzing the event, and thank you to all our volunteers for running the activities!

One of the most missed school activies that we lost during Covid was field trips. Luckily for us at Forest Hill, they are back with a bang this spring! PTA has supported all grades going on field trips this year, and our students have had some amazing experiences. Some of the trips we've been on include kindergarten going to Happy Hollow, first grade to Sanborn Park, second grade to YSI at Vasona, thrid grade to see SchoolHouse Rock Live!, fourth grade to the San Jose Museum of Art, and 5th grade to the Tech Interactive. Some of our SDC classes went to the Kvamme Center for Adaptive Riding and got up close and personal with some new equine friends!

Thank you to our PTA for funding these trips as well as all the volunteers it takes to attend as chaperones! Thank you to our teachers for organizing these fun and educational opportunities. We appreciate you!

A new program that started this year is our Recess Buddies for our TK and Kindergarten morning recess.
During the morning recess, there are about five or six 4th and 5th graders that help in each of the kindergarten and TK yards. Mrs. Vander Kooi, one of the teacher advisors for our Student Council Leadership program, developed this idea so that that are older students that are available to younger ones to help solve problems that would arise on the playground and to help lead games and activities.
There are three weeks of students that help, so like our adult yard duty, they rotate weeks. We have provided the weekly schedule on the Student Council Leadership Seesaw for the students to have access to, and all of the 4th and 5th grade teachers have posted the schedule in their classrooms. In the end, it is the students' responsibility to make sure they know what week it is.
For the students to learn what to do, Mrs. Vander Kooi and Mrs. McClean reviewed recess expectations during one of their student council meetings. They also discussed the expectations of the recess buddies during the meetings. Students understand that they are in the TK and Kinder yards to be good role models and provide examples of respectful, responsible, and safe behavior.
The students that are involved are in the areas prior to recess play time to help the students open their snacks and drinks. They also have been helpful in taking students to the office when needed. We can tell how excited the kinder and TK students get when they see the recess buddies come out to facilitate games with them! This program has been a huge success in its first year and we hope to continue it next year. Thank you to all of our fourth and fifth graders who have helped this year, and to Mrs. Vander Kooi and Mrs. McClean for getting the program started!
